APPLICATIONS BEHIND SPACE TECHNOLOGY

The future promises crazy adventures throughout the universe and it should be considered our good luck that we are alive at the right time to witness the birth of a space faring race. Among sciences, computers and telemetry were once leading edge technologies that might have been considered space technology due to their criticality to boosters and spacecraft. Space is such an alien environment that attempting to work in it requires new techniques and knowledge. We are going on talking about space related facts. Let's head on to our topic which is related to space technology. And Yes, we are going to explore space technologies that we come across every day.

Space technology is technology for use in travel beyond  earth’s atmosphere. Space organizations like NASA have researched numerous techniques to improve space exploration and communication with space shuttles. It led NASA exploring new horizons for humanity that are now being put  to everyday applications. In this article, we are going to see such technologies which inspired everyday applications.




1.CAMERA SENSORS:

NASA’s missions involve technologies that deliver unprecedented views of our universe, providing fuel for scientific imagination. After continuous efforts of developing image sensors, the NASA scientist Eric Fossum came up with Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor(CMOS) for practical use of capturing in the extreme environment of space.

As every technique has some demerits behind it. In the same way, CMOS displayed signal noise and other issues while capturing. After working on the demerits, fossum used the Charge Coupled Device(CCD) technology, developed CMOS active pixel sensors and released them for public use. After the publication, it just revolutionized the digital imaging industry. Even CMOS active pixel sensors are used in GOPRO and smartphone cameras.

 

2.EMBEDDED WEB TECHNOLOGY AND IOT:

IOT helps you to connect electronic devices to the internet, which enables any user to access their devices remotely. Embedded web technology decreases the cost of developing and maintaining the user interface to the embedded system through a web browser running on a standard PC.

This technology is used by astronauts to conduct and monitor experiments on International Space Station(ISS).It was released in public domain and it this technology gave rise to IOT.IOT is used in smart homes, wearables and also as Google home too which is a Bluetooth, wifi enabled speaker which doubles up as a virtual assistant.


3. GPS:

GPS is nothing but Global Positioning System which is based on the use of satellites in Earth orbit, it allows accurate determination of geographical locations wherever you are in the globe. It uses satellites that transmit information that measures distance between satellites and the user.

Space organizations send satellites into earth’s orbit for numerous purposes and one of the main purposes is the GPS network. The common example we all know about GPS networks are the usage of navigation services like Google maps. Combining AI and ML, GPS helps operate autonomous vehicles which in turn come out as driverless cars.

 

4.DATA ANALYSIS AND STORAGE:

The volume of data NASA has to manage is mind-boggling. Do you know?? NASA is one of the biggest  generators of data. Some missions could generate 24TB in a single day. So handling, storing and analyzing this data is so challenging. NASA makes use of big data through the Atmospheric Science Data Centre (ASDC).The information from ASDC helps scientists understand the cause of climate change as well as atmospheric processes.

Another way  is NASA uses big data through Planetary Data System(PDS).It is responsible for presenting scientific information into a single website and it provides access to excess of 100TB of space models, images, telemetry and other information gathered from planetary missions from the past 30 years.

Space technology is growing exponentially and turning science fiction into reality. With the new inventions and discovery of better alternatives in space technology, existing technologies are getting cheaper and more advanced. The improvements in space technology will facilitate a better understanding of climatic changes and faster broadband connections. Hence ,it is essential for organizations to understand the potential of space technology and adapt to the changing industry trends to ensure a significant position in a competitive market.
