Virtual Private Network

VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK

A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network and enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network. Applications running across a VPN may benefit from the functionality, security, and management of the private network. It provides access to resources inaccessible on the public network and is typically used for telecommuting workers.

From a user perspective, the resources available within the private network can be accessed remotely.

TYPES OF VPN:

Remote access:

A host-to-network configuration is analogous to connecting a computer to a local area network.

This type provides access to an enterprise network, such as an intranet.

Site to site:

A site-to-site configuration connects two networks. This configuration expands a network across geographically disparate offices, or a group of offices to a data center installation.

Extranet-based site-to-site:

An extranet site-to-site VPN joins sites belonging to multiple organizations.

HOW DOES VPN HELP US?

  1. Bypass geographic restrictions on websites or streaming audio and video.

  2. Security

  3. Easily manageable

  4. Avoid bandwidth throttling

  5. Reduce the support costs

  6. Hide Your Browsing Activity From Your Local Network and ISP

BEST VPN SERVICES:

ExpressVPN – This VPN server has the best combination of ease-of-use, really fast servers, and supports streaming media and torrenting, all for a cheap price.

TunnelBear – This VPN is really easy to use, is great for using at the coffee shop, and has a (limited) free tier. It’s not good for torrenting or streaming media though.

StrongVPN – not quite as easy to use as the others, but you can definitely use them for torrenting and streaming media.

Why does the Home minister of India want to ban VPN?

VPN can be used by cyber criminals to avoid surveillance. Threat actors masking their IP addresses online can be very difficult for law enforcement to trace. The authorities then have to rely on much more extensive surveillance methods to track these criminal activities online.

In its recommendation, the committee highlights that VPNs “allow criminals to remain anonymous online.” This way, many unsolicited activities online go untraced. Since these VPN services are readily available, threat actors can very easily use them to stay hidden.

Drawbacks:

  1. Our privacy isn’t always guaranteed.

  2. Using a VPN is illegal in some countries.

  3. The cost of safe and high quality is really high.

  4. Using a VPN on mobile increases data usage.

  5. With some VPNs, our connection can be slower.
