FLAVORS OF LINUX

FLAVORS OF LINUX

LINUX:

Linux is  a family of open-source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel. An operating system was first developed and released by Linus Torvalds on September 17, 1991.

Linux is typically packaged in a linux distribution.

First get into the topic, we must know the categories of linux. This might help us in exploring more things in linux.

The basic categories of linux distributions are

  • Security focused

  • User focused.

We might think about how it would be possible to have more distributions in linux. The answer is very simple. LINUX IS FREELY REDISTRIBUTABLE. Anyone can create any distribution based on their preferences.

FLAVORS OF LINUX:

  1. Debian:

Debian also known as Debian GNU/Linux is one of the Linux distributions. It is free and open source software. It was established by Ian Murdock on August 16, 1993.  It has access to online repositories that contain over 51,000 packages. Debian is a popular choice for servers, for example as the operating system component of a LAMP stack. The default for the version 8.0 Jessie was changed again to Xfce in November 2013, and back to GNOME in September 2014.

  1. Fedora:

Most Fedora editions use the RPM package management system, using DNF as a tool to manage the RPM packages. Fedora uses ANACONDA as the system installer. Beginning with Fedora version 30, it is available in five editions. They are workstation, server, Iot, CoreOS, silverblue.

  1. Ubuntu:

Ubuntu is based on Debian with additional softwares like OpenOffice.org and firefox. It is available in various remixes and spinoffs. Example, kubuntu, xubuntu, Lubuntu. These mostly differ by offering a desktop environment.

  1. Linux mint:

Linux mint is a community-driver Linux distribution based on Ubuntu bundled with  a variety of free and open source applications. It provides support for multimedia for those who choose to include proprietary software such as multimedia codecs. It has a well-deserved reputation for ease of use.

  1. openSUSE:

It is a project that serves to promote the use of free and open source software. It is well known for its distributions, mainly tumbleweed, a tested rolling release and leep, a distribution with long term support.

  1. Kali linux:

Kali Linux, a pre-installed Debian derivative, is a loaded forensics and pen testing distro that is popular today. Kali Linux specifically comes loaded with tools including Ettercap, as-Aircrack-ng, Foremost and many others.

  1. Qubes OS:

Qubes OS is the top security-focused Linux based OS system around today. The magic behind Qubes OS’s security prowess lies in the fact that it isolates your files and VMs. This translates into greater protection from malware attacks when they occur

  1. Parrot security OS:

This Linux-based OS has been called a “game-changer” with regard to security and privacy. Parrot Security OS is designed to test your system by staging an authorized attack on your system to assess it for security vulnerabilities and your system’s security strength.

  1. Mandriva:

Formerly known as Mandrake, Mandriva is notable for its cutting-edge software, excellent administration suite and 64-bit edition. It was also the first major distribution to jump on the netbook bandwagon with out-of-the box support.

  1. Sabayon/Gentoo:

Italian Sabayon is essentially a LiveCD version of Gentoo, which is known for allowing users to individually optimize each component. Both are considered advanced Linux distributions aimed primarily at experienced users.

Since Linux is a freely distributed operating system, there are many flavors available. So I’ve just listed the top distributions of linux. Thanks for reading… To get more knowledge about computer science field, kindly get along with our posts.
